Newgrange was built over 5,000 years ago, about 3,200 B.C during the Stone Age.  It is a passage tomb.  Above the entrance to the passage there is an opening called a roof-box. On the Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year), the light of the rising sun enters the roof box, lights up the passage and shines onto the floor of the inner chamber. The inner chamber lights up for just 17 minutes.

Newgrange is built with 200,000 tons of material.  It took hundreds of people 20-30 years to build it.  The ancient builders were highly skilled. The passage is water-proof.  The passage, the chamber, and the roof were all built without cement.  The builders filled the gaps between the roof stones in the passage with sea sand and burned soil to keep the passage dry.

It has many beautifully designed and carved stones.  Many Irish legends take place in Newgrange. It is said to have been a burial place for the Chief of the Tuatha Dé Danann who ruled Ireland.
