The Book of Kells

The Book of Kells is a book of the four Gospels.  It is very beautiful and highly decorated with Celtic designs.  It has many drawings of colourful birds and beasts.  It was written about 800 AD by monks who spent their entire lives decorating their pages of the book.  They only stopped for prayers, mealtimes and to work in the fields.  It was written on animal skins using handmade inks.  About 185 cow skins were used to make the book.

They started writing it in Iona, an island off the west coast of Scotland. In 806, after a Viking raid on the island, the monks moved to a new monastery at Kells, County Meath.

The Book of Kells is on display in the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin. It has 680 pages.  All except two pages are decorated.  The designs are often copied and used in books and jewelry.
